CARE OF YOUR CHICKS ON ARRIVAL!

  1. WARMTH FIRST! Before anything! Box by the stove, lid ON. Ninety to ninety-five under the lid. Too cold and they pile up and holler. Too hot and they stand about panting with their wings held out. Just right and they HUSH. You will hear it!
  2. WATER! Lukewarm, not cold. Dip each beak ONCE. They are clever and will remember!
  3. NO FEED for the first few hours! They packed their own lunch in the egg and are still working through it.
  4. NEWSPAPER IS NOT A FLOOR! Their feet go right out from under them. Burlap, rough toweling or clean chaff. Spread the paper UNDER that.
  5. A LAMP IS NOT A HEN — but it will do! One 100-watt bulb, eighteen inches up, with a cool corner they can walk off to.
  6. COUNT THEM! Look through EVERY hole. Count heads, not peeps. Peeps exaggerate!
  7. If one is STANDING IN THE CORNER LOOKING THOUGHTFUL, it is not sick, it is thinking! Have a look at it through the lid. It will rejoin the others directly. Mine always do!

A chick that's warm is a chick that's strong! · Heads before feed, water's the need!
