Cloth flat, Zanolli. Flat. You're holding it like a napkin and every place your thumb sits comes back on my next weighing.

Eleven bins on the apron, Krivak's phoned in, so it's me and you and whatever's in that box. Forty minutes and we're running again. I'll say forty.

The lab had this set fourteen days. Fourteen. It comes back with a weight sitting in the wrong slot and both seals whole. Docket CL-4471/7. Either somebody on their bench put it down where it didn't go, or it's the other thing, and I'm not saying the other thing out loud. I've rung them twice.

She pushes the case a hand's width to the left, off the wet ring, and does not look at it again.

No. Forty's wrong. The sun's on the east arm till eleven and I forgot it. Anything I do on this table before eleven I do twice. Call it an hour.

You put one against one. Fine. What did the beam just tell you? Say all three things it could have said, not the one it did.

Right. Left down, right down, level. Three. So why are you asking it a question that's only got two answers in it?

And get this out of your head now: this doesn't weigh anything. It compares. It will tell you that this side and that side differ and it will never once tell you what either of them is. That's the entire reason a set of check weights exists, and it's the entire reason one bad weight in the set stops every scale in this building.

One against one, one against one, one against one — that's eight goes, and at the end of it you've got nothing and the edges are worse.

Three against three. You're not making the difference bigger by piling them on. You're putting the same difference on a swing that's got room to show it. The beam being stiff isn't a fault, it's where the weight of the beam sits under the edge, and a beam soft enough to see a hair with is a beam that won't stand still on a windy apron. So don't ask for a better scale. Ask a bigger question.

Arrest. ARREST. Every time you set a weight down on a live beam you're hammering an agate edge flat, and when it's flat it's flat. There's no sharpening it, there's no lapping it, it's a new instrument or it's nothing.

Three knife edges, one plane. If they're not, this thing is honest empty and a liar at two kilos and not one person in this shed would ever find out.

She turns the stray five hundred over twice in the cloth.

That's not ours. Five hundred off a Bocchieri set — look at the knurl, it runs the other way, and look at the figure, that's pre-war stamping. Somebody dropped it in here years back because it sat in the hole. I've been meaning to post it back to them since before you started.

Hour's wrong too. I counted you as a second pair of hands and then I took the cloth off you, so I'm down to one pair. Hour and a quarter.

Brass goes light. It doesn't go heavy. They get slid instead of lifted, the base wears, the plating goes, and there's an adjusting cavity in the underside a thumbnail will empty if anybody's picked at it. Thirty years in a shed and the whole set walks one direction. So don't stand there hunting a heavy one. There isn't one. You're solving a harder problem than the one on the table.

Forceps or the cloth. A fingerprint is salt and oil and it's real milligrams. A weight you've had in your hand all week is not the weight it was on Monday, and I can show you on this beam.

And don't put one of ours against anything of theirs. Brass against steel, same figure stamped on both, they'll still disagree, because they're different sizes and they're shoving different amounts of air out of the way. You compare a set against its own kind and nothing else.

Cold store smells of wet concrete and ammonia. That's all it's ever smelled of.

Not one load has gone out of this shed under weight since March of two thousand nine. Not one.

Hour and a quarter's wrong. I assumed the lab sent it back complete and I never counted the slots. Count them. — Right. So it's an hour and a half and a phone call.

The seal being whole is the whole legal point. Whole seal means nobody's substituted anything, which means it left their bench exactly like this. Nobody in this building opens the cavity on a sealed weight. Not me, not you, not for anything, not if you're certain.

When it's right, the press crimps, the docket gets stamped, and I ring the beam once. When it's wrong I'm not going to tell you it's wrong. You'll know, because the line's still stopped.

Docket CL-4471/7. Fourteen days, wrong slot, seals whole. I've said it. I'll say it to them again at twelve, and I'll want the name of whoever handled it.

March of two thousand nine, and I'll say it again at the end of the day. Nothing has gone out of here light on my line.

Eleven bins. Peas on the sill. Put the cloth down flat.
