The Grand Finale Machine

A working program of set pieces, fired in order or fired all at once, as the crowd deserves.

Tap a line to send it up. Tap the sky to put one wherever you're pointing.

Concerning the program — Order is a suggestion. Grandmother fired the Willow last for forty-one years and only changed it the summer the wind came off the lake wrong, and even then she apologized to it afterward.

Concerning the Ring — It lands crooked nine times in ten. A crooked ring is still a ring. We have never once heard a crowd complain about the angle of a hoop of fire.

Concerning weather — Damp is fine. Damp air carries the report farther and the children feel it in their sternums, which is the whole point. Fog is not fine. Fog eats the tops.

Concerning refreshment — The tent stays open until the last star is out: lemonade, coffee blacker than the sky, and Old Haymaker's Switchel cold in the tub. Two cents back on the empty. Please do not return the bottles after dark, we cannot see you and you cannot see the guy-wires.

Concerning the noise — If it startles you, that is not a mistake. That is a thing we built on purpose, out of paper and salt and a very old recipe, and we are so glad it reached you.
