THE WALKING TOUR

Hello and welcome! I am Arletta Sunn and I typed this whole thing myself in the ticket booth so if there's a crooked letter that's mine. My husband Dell runs the mower and the snack window. His brother Junior Prewitt built every animal you're about to see — he did boat hulls in Corpus Christi for eleven years and he says a Brontosaurus is easier than a cabin cruiser because a Brontosaurus doesn't have to float.

Every one of them is welded rebar first, a whole skeleton of it, then chopped-strand fiberglass laid over the top by hand and sanded and painted with exterior house enamel same as you'd put on a porch rail.

Go counterclockwise. I mean it. Sun's behind you the whole loop that way and your pictures come out. Tap a number on the map and I'll walk you to it.

Loop is a quarter mile. Takes most folks twenty-five minutes, longer if you buy a slush, and you should.

PARK RULES
  1. STAY ON THE GRAVEL, folks. The goatheads out there will ruin your day AND your sandals. They go right through a canvas sneaker.
  2. One animal is for climbing: the little Triceratops at Stop 3, children under 90 pounds. That's not me being fussy, that's what the rebar's rated at and Junior figured it twice.
  3. Do not lean on the Stegosaurus plates. They're bolted separate and a bolt is a bolt.
  4. Touch anything you like — that's what the enamel is for — but if it feels tacky it got painted this morning, so admire that one with your eyes.
  5. Dogs welcome on a leash. Ours is Peanut and she will follow you the whole loop for nothing.
  6. No glass on the picnic lawn, please. Dell mows it barefoot and has opinions.

Window opens at ten and the fryer's hot by ten-fifteen. If the slush machine is running slow it's because it's 104 out there and it is doing its very best, same as the rest of us.
