The thing I want you to remember is that this is happening right now. Two men, six hundred million miles around the sun from where they were born, are about to set down on another world, and the only thing connecting them to home is a thread of radio waves and the attention of sixteen people in a darkened room in Texas.
The job is not exciting in the way the public thinks. The job is checklists, voltage traces, propellant margins, and the discipline of saying GO when every number says go, and NO-GO when one number does not — even if it ruins your week, your year, your career. It is the most ordinary work in the world done at the highest possible attention.
And then sometimes, very rarely, a transmission comes down through the noise and you hear a voice from 238,000 miles away saying everything is fine, and your console lights are all green, and you remember that what we built here is a kind of love expressed as engineering.
