Dear Friend,
I am writing this from the second-floor office at 412 Locust, with the cream shades half-drawn against the afternoon sun and the faithful hum of Studio A's Ampex tape decks rewinding below me. Twenty years ago I worked a hardware counter up in Decorah. I learned this: a man comes in once because he needs a wrench, but he comes back because he remembers the place. The remembering is the whole thing.
A jingle is how a small business gets remembered when it cannot afford a billboard on every county road. Forty-five seconds of bright brass and a tune that catches on a child's tongue can do what a year of newsprint cannot. I have watched it happen — at the Bluebird, at Mercer's, at Buster's Garage out in Council Bluffs. Marv Tipton showed me his ledger last month. Receipts up thirty-eight percent year on year. He said the jingle made his shop feel friendly, and friendly is what people drive across town for.
We are not in the business of fooling anyone. We are in the business of helping a good shop be heard. Every voice on every reel here belongs to a real person who believes in what they sell — the radio just carries that belief a little farther down the road.
Thank you for listening, and for caring enough to read this far.
